ODUMAKIN FLAYS FG OVER N5,000 STIPEND
Human rights activist and Afenifere spokesperson, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, has berated the Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government for denying that it promised to give N5,000 to unemployed graduates.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, was quoted as saying at an interactive session with members of Civil Society Organisations at the National Press centre in Abuja, that Buhari did not promise unemployed graduates N5,000 stipends.
A statement by the Ministry of Information and Culture which was posted on its official Facebook quoted Mohammed as saying, “We did not promise N5,000 to unemployed graduates but to vulnerable Nigerians.”
Interestingly, Buhari’s wife, Aisha, had last week appealed to the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government not to renege on its campaign promise of paying N5,000 to 25 million unemployed Nigerians and to provide school children one free meal per day.
Reacting to the Federal Government’s latest claim, Odumakin told our correspondent that he was not shocked over the development.
He said the Federal Government should have apologised to Nigerians for not being able to honour its promise rather than lie to Nigerians.
Odumakin said, “There has been a lot of dillydallying on this matter since this government took over. The APC said during the electioneering that 25 million youths would be paid. They even erected billboards some of which are still visible today.
“By denying the promise, they are removing integrity from governance. They should have just explained to Nigerians that the drop in oil price has affected their manifesto and the reality on the ground makes their promise impossible to meet.
“However, the path they are taking is nothing but fraudulent. Some of us knew that their promises were impossible to honour but that is how politicians operate. They promise heaven but make excuses when it is time to perform.”
Later checks by our correspondent, however, revealed that the Facebook post by the ministry had been deleted.
