WHAT WE LEARNT LAST WEEK IN NIGERIA (23-29TH November 2015)
In a week that was filled with drama, climax and anti-climax,
from the burial of a great woman to that of a man who just a day before his
death was certain he would governor the next week.
From a seemingly boring
verbal attack on a president by a sitting governor to rape scandal involving
the son of a late governorship
aspirant. It was truly a week to remember.
FocusNaijaa highlight some of the key events and what we learnt from them.H.I.D FINALLY GOES HOME
Late Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo was the wife of former
Premier of the old western region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. The Matriarch died at
her residence on the 19th of September after she reportedly presided
over the family meeting on her proposed centenary birthday party.
HID Awolowo was buried beside her husband in a damask cloth
she bought 36years ago for the very purpose. She was buried in a gold casket.
RIP MAMA
FAYOSE IS FAST BECOMING BORING
In other countries, when a governor verbally attacks the
president of the country by calling him a liar, I’m just trying to imagine how
the headlines would look like. U will definitely get something like this,
“shocker as governor Akpororo calls president kweli kweli a liar. Yeah, that’s
the gravity of it.
But when Fayose called Buhari a liar last week, not so many media outfits carried the news with the gravity that such news should have. And do not
blame them as we all are now used to it. Fayose verbal attack on the president
started way before the election that saw Buhari become the president of
Nigeria. He once referred to the president, then a presidential candidate as an
old man who is likely wearing pampers.
In his latest rent, he accuse the president of lying about
looted funds which the president said has been returned. He went further to say
that his (president Buhari) government were that of ‘deceitful change’.
Whatever Fayose is trying to achieve with his constant
verbal attacks, we on the outside are beginning to find it one too many and also
BORING.
DAVID MARK IS NOT SO UNTOUCHABLE AFTERALL
Just like a certain Lionel Messi at his very best, yeah I’m
a die-hard football fan, Untouchable seem to be the best word to describe
senator David Mark until last week when his election victory was annulled by
the Appeal Court.
From being accused of corruption practices whilst as senate
president to accusation that he has never won an election free and fair, no one
had been able to get hold of the Benue State born senator.
But on Friday last
week, the court of appeal sitting in Markurdi annulled the election of the
immediate past senate president and ordered a fresh elections within 90days.
David Mark’s election victory was challenged by the APC’s
candidate at the tribunal but had his petition dismissed before heading to the
Supreme Court.
But just like a confident warrior, David Mark has since
boasted he would win the election if conducted 100times over. Hmm all I can say
is, slow down Mark the (UN) touchable, a new sheriff is in town.
UNLIKE THE NORM, NOT EVERYONE CRIES WHEN SOMEONE DIES
It is believed that when someone dies, something bad has
happened, so everyone is expected to wear a sad face, even if you
secretly had wished the person dead. But last weekend a certain lady broke the
norm, she was rejoicing over the death of Audu Abubakar. Umm in case u just
came back from Mars today, let me rush you through the details.
Audu Abubakar was the governorship aspirant of the APC in
Kogi State. He died just a day after the election he contested in was declared
inconclusive by INEC.
Then not long after the news of his death hit the social media,
#sugabelly, I have checked and checked but couldn’t get her real name. Well lets stick with sugabelly, funny name huh?
#sugabelly was celebrating all over social media.
Huh! Did she kill the man? No
she didn’t. Did she hate the man that much? Apparently yes and even his
children too. But why?
Well she accused Audu Abubakar sons of gang raping her with
their friends. And last week she published a long and detailed account of her
devastating experience in the hands of the Audu’s. A claim Mustapha has since
denied. Mustapha’s wife has also joined in the feud and it seem to be getting
messier by the day.
Hopefully it ends soon.
BOKO HARAM NOW USING ‘TRAINED’ ABDUCTEES FOR SUICIDE MISSIONS
When news filtered in that a bomb blast had gone off when a
suicide bomber blew himself up among a Shia procession on their way to Zaria,
it was received with the same nonchalant attitude as always.
The bomber’s
accomplice was arrested though and confessed that they were sent by Boko Haram.
He also said they were part of the young men abducted last year by the sect in Mubi,
Borno state and they have been receiving military training since then.
He confessed that they were sent to Kano 11 days ago and
kept in a house specifically for that attack.
What kind of military training will make a young man accept
to blow himself up even when he had the chance to escape? We definitely have a huge battle in our hands and it doesn’t
seem to involve bomb and gun.
